Why is asking "how much is one solar panel" the wrong question?
Because the panel is a minority of what you pay for, and a panel by itself produces nothing usable.
An installed system also includes the inverter or microinverters that convert DC to household AC, racking and flashings that keep every roof penetration watertight, conduit and wiring, a possible main service panel upgrade, design and engineering, permit fees, utility interconnection, commissioning, and the labour of a roof crew and licensed electricians. Remove any one of those and you don't have a cheaper system — you have parts on a roof.
This is why per-panel advertising is worth treating warily. "Panels from $X" tells you nothing about the finished price, and the two ways it usually misleads are:
- The soft costs are where the variation lives. Labour, permitting, engineering and electrical work make up a large share of an installed price in California, and they don't shrink because the panel was cheap.
- A low panel price can mean a low panel. Cheaper modules of the same physical size produce fewer watts, so you need more of them — and more panels means more racking, more penetrations, more labour, and more roof consumed.
Compare complete installed system prices, in dollars, for a stated system size in kilowatts. Anything else isn't comparable.
How many solar panels does a San Diego home need?

Higher-wattage panels mean fewer of them for the same output, which matters when the binding constraint is roof space rather than budget — a common situation on smaller San Diego lots, on homes with complicated rooflines, and on any roof where usable area is broken up by chimneys, vents, skylights and shading.
Roof orientation matters as much as count. South-facing gets the most annual production. West-facing produces less overall but produces it later in the day, which under current rate rules is worth more per kilowatt-hour because it reaches into the expensive late-afternoon window. What decides how many panels you actually need?
Six things, and only the first one should drive the initial number.
1. Your annual electricity usage. The starting point, taken from twelve months of bills rather than one. This is the number a proposal should be built on. 2. When you use it. A household that uses most of its power between 4 p.m. and 9 p.m. gets less benefit from a bigger array and more from storage, because production has largely stopped by then. 3. Usable roof area and orientation. Not total roof area — the parts that face the right way, are free of shade, and leave the setbacks and access paths a fire inspector expects. 4. Shading. Trees, neighbouring buildings, chimneys. Module-level electronics limit the damage one shaded panel does, but shade still costs production. 5. What's changing at your house. An EV, a heat pump, a pool, or air conditioning being added within a couple of years should be sized for now. Retrofitting more capacity later costs more than including it initially. 6. Whether you're staying on gas. Electrifying heating, water heating or cooking substantially raises consumption, and it's cheaper to plan the array around that once.
What should *not* drive the number is available roof space. Filling a roof because there's room is how people end up exporting half their production for a fraction of its retail value. What will your SDG&E bill look like after solar?
Lower, and not zero. Being clear about this prevents the most common disappointment in residential solar.
Three things keep a bill from disappearing:
You remain a utility customer. Fixed charges for being connected to the grid continue regardless of how much you produce, because you're still using the grid as backup and as an export destination.
Export earns far less than usage costs. Under California's net billing tariff — mandatory for new interconnections since 15 April 2023 under the CPUC's net-metering rules — power you export earns roughly $0.05/kWh, while power you buy during the 4 p.m.–9 p.m. peak costs around $0.40/kWh. Exporting a surplus does not offset an evening deficit one-for-one.
Production is seasonal. June output is far higher than December output, while usage often peaks in late summer. Expect months of substantial credit and months of a real bill.
This is also why your neighbour's experience may not predict yours. The CPUC reports that more than 90% of customer-sited solar capacity in California's three large investor-owned utility territories is still on legacy net energy metering, which credits exports at full retail rates. Different scope. A quote that excludes a needed main panel upgrade, or ignores a roof with five years left, will always look cheaper — until the change order. Ask each company what it has *excluded*.
Prices shown net of an incentive that no longer exists. Several of the highest-ranking San Diego cost pages still display prices after a 30% federal credit that ended on 31 December 2025. If a proposal shows a "net cost after tax credit" for a 2026 install, that's a red flag about the whole document.
Different equipment and different crews. Panel and inverter tiers vary in output and warranty. And a company that assembles a crew of subcontractors per job carries a different level of accountability than one whose own people do the roof work and the electrical work — which matters most when something needs fixing in year four.
