Two notes on reading this table honestly. The square-footage column is a rough guide, not a rule — a 2,600 sq ft home with gas heat, gas water heating and gas cooking often needs less system than an 1,800 sq ft all-electric house with a heat pump and an EV. And the "with prepaid lease" column is a different purchase structure, not a discount on the same one; it lowers what you pay upfront by 30–40%.

What's actually included in an installed price?

This is the question that makes two quotes comparable. A complete installed price covers all of the following, and a quote that's missing a line isn't cheaper — it's incomplete.

  • Panels. Usually the largest single hardware line, and the one people fixate on.
  • Inverter or microinverters. Converts DC to usable AC. Module-level electronics cost more and give you per-panel monitoring and better shade tolerance.
  • Racking and mounting hardware. Rails, feet, and the flashings that keep every roof penetration watertight. Cheap work here is what leaks in year three.
  • Electrical work. Conduit, wiring, disconnects, breakers, and a main service panel upgrade if yours can't take the array.
  • Labour. Roof crew and electricians. On our jobs both are in-house rather than subcontracted.
  • Design and engineering. Load analysis, layout, structural check, and the plan set the permit is issued against.
  • Permits and inspection fees. Varies by jurisdiction — see below.
  • Utility interconnection. The application and approval that lets the system legally export and earn credit.
  • Monitoring setup and commissioning. Configuring production monitoring and, where there's storage, the time-of-use schedule.

When you compare bids, ask each company to identify which of those ten lines is *excluded*. The most commonly omitted are the main panel upgrade and the interconnection work, and both surface later as change orders.

What makes one San Diego solar quote higher than another?

Seven factors, in roughly the order they move the number.

1. System size. The dominant factor, and the one that should come from your usage data. This is where honest sizing saves real money: with no federal credit absorbing 30% of the cost, every unnecessary kilowatt is entirely yours to pay for. 2. Roof condition and remaining life. The single biggest hidden cost in residential solar. Covered in its own section below. 3. Roof material and pitch. Concrete tile and Spanish tile — common across much of the county — take longer to work than composition shingle, because tiles have to be lifted, set aside and reset without breakage. Low-slope and torch-down roofs need a different mounting and flashing approach again. Steep pitches and second storeys add access and safety time. 4. Electrical panel capacity. An older 100-amp panel usually needs upgrading before a meaningful array can be added. A modern 200-amp panel with spare breaker space avoids the cost entirely. 5. Shading and layout complexity. Trees, chimneys, dormers, skylights and neighbouring buildings can force a split array across multiple roof planes, more racking, longer conduit runs, and module-level electronics to keep one shaded panel from dragging down a string. 6. Equipment tier. Higher-efficiency panels cost more per unit and produce more per square foot — which matters when roof space is the binding constraint rather than budget. 7. Review requirements at your address. HOA architectural review, coastal zone considerations, or Historic Resources Board review on some older Mission Hills addresses each add time, and time occasionally adds cost.

The two you can influence before getting quotes are the roof and the panel. If either needs work, sequencing it properly is worth more than negotiating on price.

How long does solar installation take in San Diego?

The on-roof work is 1–3 days. The whole process is about 6–10 weeks. Almost everyone is surprised by which parts are slow.

1. Site assessment and design — days. Usage analysis, roof measurement, shade study, electrical panel check. 2. Proposal — within 48 hours of the assessment on our jobs. 3. Permitting — same-day to a few weeks, entirely depending on your jurisdiction. See the next section. 4. Installation — 1–3 days for solar alone. 3–5 days if the roof is being replaced at the same time. A battery adds roughly a day. 5. Inspection — days to a couple of weeks, subject to the local inspector's calendar. 6. Utility interconnection and Permission to Operate — this is the long pole. SDG&E has to approve interconnection before you can legally run the system and earn export credit. It's the least predictable step and the one no installer fully controls.

For a City of San Diego address, a realistic quote-to-switch-on window is 4–8 weeks. Independent cities and unincorporated areas vary. Anyone promising two weeks end-to-end is describing the install, not the process — the honest version of that answer names interconnection as the variable.

Do you need a permit to install solar panels in San Diego?

Yes, always — and in the City of San Diego it's unusually painless, which genuinely reduces cost.

The City self-issues residential rooftop solar permits with no plan review through its solar permit programme: systems up to 38.4 kW AC, panel upgrades to 320 amps, and storage up to 38.4 kWh (20 kWh per unit), provided no fire review, structural review or combination building permit is triggered. That covers essentially every residential system. In much of the country the equivalent step means weeks of plan check and a larger fee.

Which authority handles your address matters:

  • City of San Diego neighbourhoods — La Jolla, Point Loma, Pacific Beach, Clairemont, Carmel Valley, Scripps Ranch, Rancho Bernardo, Mission Hills, North Park — go through City of San Diego Development Services.
  • Independent cities — Carlsbad, Chula Vista, Del Mar, El Cajon, Encinitas, Escondido, La Mesa, National City, Oceanside, Poway, San Marcos, Santee and Vista — each run their own Building Division with their own timelines and fees. Escondido, Poway and Del Mar publish theirs.
  • Unincorporated areas — including Rancho Santa Fe and Fallbrook — go through County Planning & Development Services.

One extra to budget for at some addresses: Historic Resources Board review in older neighbourhoods is a real additional two to four weeks. It doesn't usually block a system, but it needs to be planned for rather than discovered.

Why does the roof decide your solar budget?

Because panels last around 25 years and a roof under them might not — and separating those two timelines is the most expensive mistake in residential solar.

The rule we use: if your roof has under about ten years of service life left, replace it before the panels go on. The arithmetic is straightforward. Removing and resetting an existing array so a roofer can work underneath costs $2,800–$4,800, on top of the roofing job itself, and you get nothing for the money — it's pure rework.

Doing both at once instead:

  • Combined roof and solar runs $30,000–$60,000 depending on roof size, material and system size.
  • That's roughly 15–20% less than hiring two companies, because you're paying for one mobilisation, one set of scaffolding and one crew's overhead.
  • The flashings and penetrations are done once, correctly, by the people responsible for both layers — so there's nobody to blame if it leaks.

What changed now the federal tax credit has ended?

The 30% federal residential credit ended 31 December 2025, with no step-down, and systems placed in service in 2026 don't receive it. This matters for how you read cost pages: two of the highest-ranking San Diego solar cost pages still present prices net of a 30% credit, which understates what you'd actually pay by thousands.

What that changes about a purchase decision:

  • Compare gross prices. Any "after incentives" figure for a 2026 install needs to be questioned, and if the incentive is a lease structure rather than a credit, that should be stated plainly.
  • Sizing accuracy matters more. Overbuilding used to cost you 70 cents on the dollar. Now it costs you all of it.
  • Self-consumption is where the value sits. Under California's net billing tariff — in force for new interconnections since 15 April 2023, per the CPUC's net-metering rules — exported power earns roughly $0.05/kWh while peak power costs about $0.40/kWh. Using your own production is worth roughly eight times exporting it.
  • Storage moved to the centre of the design for evening-heavy households, since the 4 p.m.–9 p.m. peak is the expensive window solar alone can't cover. Our battery storage page covers sizing.
  • The upfront number matters more, which is what makes a prepaid lease relevant — 30–40% off the upfront cost.

What hasn't changed is the underlying case: San Diego has expensive electricity and a lot of sun — the county averages around 263 sunny days a year — so a correctly sized system still offsets costly power for decades. The credit shortened the payback; its absence lengthens it without reversing it.

How do you work out your own payback period?

Published payback figures — the "7.4 years" and "3.9 years" you'll see on national cost pages — are averages built on assumptions that may not include your rate plan, your usage pattern or your roof. It's better to run it on your own numbers, and it takes about ten minutes.

1. Get your annual electricity spend. Add up twelve months of bills, not one month multiplied by twelve. San Diego bills swing seasonally, and summer misleads in one direction while spring misleads in the other. 2. Find how much of that a system would actually offset. This is the number an installer should give you, and the one to insist on: not "covers 100% of your usage," but the estimated monthly production against your monthly consumption. Production in December is a fraction of June. 3. Value what you offset at retail, and what you export at the export rate. Power you use yourself avoids roughly $0.40/kWh at peak. Power you export earns roughly $0.05/kWh. These are not the same and treating them as one number is the most common way payback estimates get flattered. 4. Subtract what you'll still pay. You remain a utility customer with fixed charges even at high offset, so your bill won't go to zero. 5. Divide the system cost by the annual saving. Use the gross cost for a purchase, or the actual upfront outlay if you're using a lease structure. 6. Then sanity-check it against rate direction. If utility rates rise over the system's life, real payback arrives sooner than the static calculation suggests. We won't put a number on future rate increases, and neither should anyone else.

Two things to leave out of the calculation, because they inflate it: assumed future incentives, and any assumption that you'll change your household's behaviour. Size the system for how you actually live.
